Anaesthesia is the largest single hospital specialty in the NHS.
The College is the professional body responsible for the specialty of anaesthesia throughout the UK, and ensures the quality of patient care through the maintenance of standards in anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.

The British Pain Society aims to promote education, training, research and development in all fields of pain. It endeavours to increase both professional and public awareness of the prevalence of pain and the facilities that are available for its management. The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) began life as the National Association of Theatre Nurses in 1964. It is a charity providing education and support to theatre nurses, Operating Department Practitioners and all those working in and around operating departments.
